Biography
Fivemind Reeds is a Los Angeles-based reed quintet consisting of saxophonist Alexander Lee, clarinetists Darren Liou and Kristine Llanderal, bassoonist Matthew Rasmussen, and oboist Thacher Schreiber. Formed in the fall of 2021 at UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music, they have since given multiple performances as a part of several concerts and recitals within the School of Music, including the FLUX Contemporary Chamber Music and Woodwind Chamber Music concerts. Fivemind maintains a colorful and diverse repertoire, including works by David Biedenbender, Ton der Doest, Charles Ives, Marc Mellits, Jeff Scott, Octavio Vazquez, and Roger Zare, with additional forthcoming commissions from composers Jean Ahn, Andreas Foivos Apostolou, and Madeline Barrett.
Fivemind’s interests lie in contemporary music, community engagement, and diversity and equity in the arts. In addition to the aforementioned works by Ahn, Apostolou, and Barrett, Fivemind aims to continue to diversify both the reed quintet and classical woodwind chamber repertoire. Fivemind Reeds is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
